Tourism Development and Promotion in Greater Gaborone

Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Botswana 

Objective: 

Conduct a comprehensive study of the five priority tourism sites in Greater Gaborone identified during a previous scoping mission and from which to build a future study to develop investment models and guidelines for these sites using sustainable tourism principles. 

Focus: 

Incorporating the following principles of sustainable tourism in the development process:  

Community Involvement and Empowerment: upgrading of traditional township through tourism in Old Naledi   

Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage: promotion of Gaborone´s historical core and energizing youth culture in the new Central Business District  

Education and Awareness: awakening the value of Botswana cultural heritage to tourists and residents   

Infrastructure Development: harmonizing the development of infrastructure to create sense of place and beautification of urban spaces  

Diversification of Tourism Offerings: Developing new cultural tourism products and building on existing tourism attractions   

Collaboration and Partnerships: installing new forms of governance to allow comprehensive development which has a strong tourism representation   

Latest News: 

From 15-26 April, UN Tourism was on site with the team of experts to conduct inspection visits of the five proposed priority sites and to meet with the Department of Tourism for the official inception meeting.  

The UN Tourism mission also met with the Reference Group, which includes all key stakeholders, for the presentation of the main concepts of the priority sites to secure their support and involvement in the project.  

Additional meetings were held with landowners and local community organizations to integrate their perspectives, preferences, and aspirations into the tourism development process.  

Stay tuned for updates on the conceptual urban design drawings for the sites of Greater Gaborone as well as other priority tourism sites to be developed in the other areas of Botswana!
